Job Description

DIRECTV is seeking an experienced Senior Technical Director of System Engineering to lead and shape our large-scale Advertising Technology initiatives. This role combines deep technical expertise with strategic leadership to drive architectural decisions, mentor engineering teams, and ensure scalable, reliable system designs across the organization. The ideal candidate will serve as a technical visionary who can balance immediate engineering needs with long-term strategic planning while fostering a culture of continuous improvement and technical excellence. Here's what you'll do: Technical Leadership & Strategy Provide technical direction and architectural guidance for complex, large-scale Ad Tech systems Lead technical design reviews and ensure implementations align with organizational best practices Drive make/buy decisions for system components, evaluating cost, value, and strategic technology alignment Develop and maintain technical roadmaps that support business objectives and scalability requirements Evangelize and advance the use of AI technology to bring new, unique Advertising capabilities to market System Design & Architecture Design and review system architectures with focus on scalability, reliability, and operational efficiency Assess and incorporate long-term impacts on technical flexibility and system maintainability Define technical standards and best practices for system engineering across multiple teams Oversee initiative lifecycle planning, including deployment strategies and decommissioning protocols Team Development & Mentorship Coach and mentor engineers across the organization on technical best practices and career development Lead technical training initiatives and knowledge sharing sessions Foster a culture of continuous learning and improvement within engineering teams Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align technical decisions with business requirements Operational Excellence Monitor system performance and reliability metrics, driving improvements where needed Participate in incident response and post-mortem analysis to prevent future issues Establish and maintain documentation standards for system designs and operational procedures Work with stakeholders to balance technical debt management with feature development Here's what you'll need: Experience & Education Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related technical field 7 - 10 years of progressive experience in system engineering and technical leadership roles Proven track record of designing and implementing large-scale, distributed systems Experience leading technical teams and driving cross-organizational initiatives Technical Skills Deep expertise in system architecture, distributed systems, and scalability patterns Strong understanding of cloud platforms, microservices architecture, and containerization Proficiency in multiple programming languages and modern development frameworks Experience with DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, and infrastructure as code Knowledge of database design, data modeling, and data pipeline architectures Leadership & Communication Demonstrated ability to influence and drive technical decisions across multiple teams within the Ad Tech space Excellent written and verbal communication skills with ability to present to executive leadership Experience mentoring and developing technical talent at various career levels Strong project management skills with ability to balance multiple competing priorities Strategic Thinking Proven ability to make strategic technical decisions considering long-term organizational impact Experience with technology evaluation, vendor assessment, and build vs. buy analysis Understanding of business drivers and ability to align technical solutions with business objectives Track record of successful large-scale system migrations and technology transformations Preferred Qualifications Extensive, proven-experience in Media and Advertising Technology Advanced degree in Computer Science or Engineering Previous experience in a Senior Director technical role Contributions to open-source projects or technical publications Experience with emerging technologies such as AI/ML, Data Science, and Cloud technologies This role offers the opportunity to shape the technical direction of our organization while working with cutting-edge technologies and leading a team of exceptional engineers. This role requires, but is not limited to, approximately 10% travel. The Base Salary range displayed below reflects the minimum and maximum target salary for the position and work location(s) listed in the job posting US Labor Market Zone(s). Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.

N4: $206,195 - $309,235
