Overview Base pay range: $16.00/hr - $19.50/hr Job Title: University Security Officer Guided by the University's mission, vision, core values and strategic plan, the University Police Department's (JCUPD) mission and values, the primary functions of the JCUPD are to provide for the safety, security, and well-being of John Carroll University (JCU) students, staff and faculty, and the broader JCU community. The foremost responsibility of the Security Officer is to provide response, services and expertise in support of these functions. The Security Officer will interact with internal constituents (students, faculty, staff, and contractors) and external constituents (parents, neighbors, merchants, governmental agencies, and others). These interactions may have significant implications for the operation of the Department, the Division, and the University. Responsibilities Respond to and assist the police officer on duty with emergencies, including criminal, medical, fire, and other emergencies on campus or affecting the JCU community. Produce non-criminal reports that are clear, concise, complete, and correct. Conduct proactive campus patrol with a community policing approach, engaging with campus constituents through positive interactions and a high-visibility presence. Address suspicious activity in an unbiased and safe manner. Ensure the physical security of JCU property; identify and remedy potential hazards. Support campus activities in planning and execution of event security, parking and transportation. Enforce campus parking rules. Ensure smooth operation of gate attendant, shuttle and JCUEMS functions, providing guidance and support as needed. Provide services to the campus community (e.g., lost and found, room lockouts, vehicle jumpstarts/lock-outs, fingerprinting, after-hours physical plant troubleshooting, and other services as appropriate). Assist with CCTV and alarm monitoring as needed. Required Qualifications Must not have been convicted in a court of law of crimes of violence or offenses involving use or threatened use of physical force or weapons toward others as related to family members. Must possess a valid Ohio driver’s license and a good driving record (no more than two moving violations in the past three years; no six-point violations or felony-related violations in the past five years). Must be able to pass an extensive background investigation, drug screen, and psychological testing. Demonstrated strong interpersonal and written/oral communication skills. Strong customer service skills and ability to respond to others with tact and diplomacy. Ability to work effectively in a diverse, multi-cultural university environment. Ability to cope with and diffuse situations involving angry or difficult people and respond appropriately in stressful or dangerous situations. Interest in supporting John Carroll's mission to inspire excellence in learning, leadership, and service. Preferred Qualifications Experience in decision-making, problem resolution and de-escalation of difficult situations. Associate degree or college-level coursework. Normal Work Location, Hours and Conditions This position works in-person from our campus in University Heights, Ohio. May work varied hours and shifts including evenings/nights, weekends and holidays. Generally works 40 hours per week on assigned shift. Some overtime may be required. May be called to work in exigent and emergency situations. May be exposed to typical security hazards related to emergency first response, physical altercation, and variable/extreme weather conditions. Physical Requirements Ability to run, walk, stand, or sit for extended or intermittent periods of time. Ability to withstand extremes of climate exposure and health/safety hazards. Ability to lift up to 25 lbs and perform tasks requiring strength, endurance and flexibility while wearing job-related equipment. Ability to restrain or detain where necessary and appropriate. Sufficient manual dexterity to operate radios, telephones, handcuffs, cameras, and other equipment; ability to operate a motor vehicle while performing multiple tasks. Compensation & Benefits Starting salary: $16.00 - $19.50 per hour, commensurate with qualifications.
